Kathmandu Nepal :— The death toll from the recent Gen Z protests in Kathmandu has risen to 73, according to police spokesperson DIG Binod Ghimire. Among the deceased are three police officers: Assistant Sub-Inspector Milan Rai, Assistant Head Constable Amrit Gurung, and Constable Uttam Thapa.
The clashes in New Baneshwor were particularly deadly. Twenty-one civilians were killed after being struck by police gunfire, either at the scene or while receiving medical treatment in hospitals. Police authorities described the deaths of their personnel as a “great loss” and said discussions are underway regarding compensation for the families.
Looting and Arson Spread Across the City
Following the protests on September 9, looting and arson incidents erupted in multiple areas of the capital. Police reported that at least 38 people lost their lives during these incidents. Fifteen bodies were found inside Bhattabhateni Supermarket and in private homes set ablaze. Rescue teams continue to identify victims and assess the full extent of property damage.
The government has promised a thorough investigation and appealed to the public for cooperation in restoring peace. Officials also indicated that steps would be taken to ensure transparency in the actions of security forces during the unrest.
Prison and Juvenile Detainees Among the Dead
Authorities confirmed that 10 inmates, including juveniles, died amid the unrest. Preliminary reports suggest that these deaths occurred due to attacks and disturbances within detention facilities. Human rights organizations have called for independent monitoring and accountability to ensure justice.
Families and Civil Society Demand Justice
Relatives of those who lost their lives have demanded accountability and justice. Family members gathered outside hospitals and government offices, calling for thorough investigations into police use of force and fair compensation for the victims.
Civil society groups echoed these demands, urging the government to prioritize human rights, transparency, and timely support for victims. Meanwhile, local administration and security personnel are reportedly working to stabilize communities and maintain public order.
The events in Kathmandu highlight the wide-reaching impact of the Gen Z protests and the escalating violence that affected both civilians and police officers. Restoring lasting peace and social stability in the capital will require coordinated efforts from the government, human rights organizations, and civil society, alongside transparent accountability for the incidents that occurred.
