Canberra, September 17, 2025 – A Joint Communiqué between Papua New Guinea and Australia on a Mutual Defence Treaty was signed today, marking a major milestone in the two nations’ security partnership.

Known as the Pukpuk Treaty, the agreement formalises a mutual defence alliance, under which an armed attack on either country will be recognised as a threat to both. It also sets out plans to expand defence cooperation, modernise recruitment pathways for Papua New Guinea citizens into the Australian Defence Force, and strengthen joint capability and interoperability.

Both governments reaffirmed respect for sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, emphasising that the treaty reflects over 50 years of cooperation and the sacrifices of past generations.

Leaders said the agreement ushers in “an historic new chapter” in regional security, deepening trust between two of the Pacific’s closest neighbours, partners, and friends.
