Opposition Condemns ACT Government’s ‘BBQ Tax’

Canberra, 18 September 2025 – Families and community members wishing to host private events or barbecues in Canberra’s local parks will now be required to pay a $93 fee, following a recent decision by the ACT Government.

These parks have traditionally been freely accessible to the public. Canberra residents have long relied on them as affordable and convenient venues for birthdays, family gatherings, weddings, and other community events. However, the government has quietly introduced new regulations requiring permits for every private event, with a $93 fee attached to each permit.

At a time when the cost of living is rising, parks have provided Canberra families with an economical option. The Labor Government’s decision, however, is expected to create additional burdens rather than ease.

The opposition, ACT Liberals, has strongly criticized the move. Opposition Leader Leanne Castley MLA stated:
“Parks are our community assets, and there is no justification for charging citizens extra to use them. Imposing hidden fees like this demonstrates Labor’s insensitivity and lack of accountability to the public.”

The opposition has called on the government to reverse the decision and warned against placing further financial strain on Canberra families.
