AI-Powered Cameras Revolutionise Bushfire Response in the ACT, Canberra

A network of cameras on ACT fire towers is transforming bushfire detection, providing 24/7 early warnings and safer responses.
The system combines rotating “guard” cameras with high-powered “sentry” cameras, giving remote operators a clear view of smoke, fire size, terrain, and accessibility—before fire trucks even leave the station.
AI analyses the feeds in real time, distinguishing smoke from dust or steam, reducing false alarms and helping volunteers respond faster and safer.
ACTRFS Chief Officer Rohan Scott says the technology supports firefighters without replacing them. “AI gives reassurance and real-time intelligence, but we will always need firefighters on the ground,” he says.
Fire Tower Operator Andrew Beer adds: “The AI never sleeps—it’s our first line of detection and helps us make better decisions early.”
