Kangaroo Management Program – Reserve Closures (2025)

Dates:
📅 10 June – 31 July 2025
🕕 Closed Monday–Thursday evenings from 6pm to 6am
🟢 Open Friday morning to Monday evening each week

Reason for Closures:
To ensure public safety during the ACT Government’s annual Kangaroo Management Program. The program aims to prevent overgrazing and protect native grasslands and threatened ecosystems.

 Reserves Affected (Closed Evenings Mon–Thurs):

  1. Aranda Bushland Nature Reserve
  2. Callum Brae Nature Reserve
  3. Crace Grasslands Nature Reserve (incl. public rural land)
  4. Farrer Ridge Nature Reserve
  5. Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve
  6. Gungaderra Grasslands Nature Reserve
  7. Isaacs Ridge Nature Reserve
  8. Jerrabomberra East Grasslands Nature Reserve (incl. adjacent public land)
  9. Jerrabomberra West Grasslands Nature Reserve
  10. Kama Nature Reserve
  11. Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve (excluding Mt Ainslie Drive and lookout)
  12. Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve
  13. Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary
  14. Mount Majura Nature Reserve
  15. Mount Mugga Mugga Nature Reserve
  16. Red Hill Nature Reserve

Program Details:

  • Purpose: To manage kangaroo populations and protect native grasslands and threatened species.
  • Methods:
    • Culling of up to 2,981 kangaroos across 16 reserves.
    • Continued use of Gona Con Immunocontraceptive Vaccine (4th year) to reduce future culling needs.
  • Ecological Justification:
    • Low rainfall has reduced grass growth.
    • Overgrazing risks long-term damage to sensitive grassland ecosystems.

Notes:

  • All closures will be signposted.
  • Entry during closed hours is an offence under the Nature Conservation Act 2014.
  • Follow any directions from Conservation Officers.
