Kathmandu Nepal– Former Prime Ministers and key political figures in Nepal were placed under military protection after the Gen-G led protests on September 7–8 (Bhadra 23–24) turned violent in the capital.

Although most former ministers and political leaders returned to their residences by Monday, security sources confirmed that former Prime Ministers KP Sharma Oli and Sher Bahadur Deuba remained under army protection due to ongoing safety concerns.

The unrest, sparked by demonstrations against corruption and systemic issues, saw protesters seize government administrative buildings, including offices of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Several political party offices, private residences of leaders, business establishments, and other state properties across the country were set on fire.

The Nepalese Army provided protection to the most prominent political figures, including Oli, Deuba, Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda), Madhav Kumar Nepal, and Jhalanath Khanal. On the morning of September 8, Oli was moved from the Prime Minister’s residence at Baluwatar to a military barracks in Shivapuri. Meanwhile, Dahal and Nepal were rescued from a political meeting at the Maoist parliamentary office.

Deuba and former Foreign Minister Dr. Arjun Rana were attacked at their residence in Budhanilkantha by enraged protesters but were rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment. Khanal was similarly protected from an attack at his home, though his wife, Ravilakshmi Chitrakar, sustained serious injuries. Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai’s residence was also targeted, though he was staying at a relative’s home at the time.

Authorities report that Kathmandu Valley has gradually returned to normalcy following the uprising, which left 19 people dead after government security forces intervened to control the protests.
