Canberra, Australia – July 2025

As the election for the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Australia for the 2025–2027 term approaches on July 26, candidates from across the country are actively declaring their candidacies and intensifying their election campaigns.

In this context, Umesh Dhakal has officially registered his candidacy for the position of Canberra State Committee Member, marking his formal entry into the NRNA Australia structure. Beginning from the grassroots level, Dhakal’s candidacy signifies his intent to contribute meaningfully to the organisation and the Nepali community in Australia.

Speaking to Kendra News following his nomination, Dhakal expressed his views:

“It is often said that one does not need a position to serve the community — and I believe that to be true. However, positions can offer platforms and opportunities to work more effectively. Until now, I have been involved in community initiatives directly and indirectly. With this candidacy, I aim to take those efforts to the next level through a new campaign and deeper engagement.”

He further emphasized that regardless of which team wins the upcoming election, he is committed to supporting the elected members and continuing to contribute to the NRNA movement.

Key Agenda Items in Dhakal’s Vision for Canberra Include:

  • Student Support: Establishing a direct contact canter for Nepali students in Canberra to access support through NRNA Australia in times of need.

  • Institutional Improvement: Actively identifying and addressing past shortcomings within NRNA, offering constructive suggestions, and working to prevent repetition of past mistakes.

  • Community Engagement: Encouraging Canberra-based NRNA members to volunteer in local Nepali community events.

  • Government Collaboration: Promoting the participation of the Nepali community in ACT Government-funded community programs.

  • Transparency & Accountability: Advocating for greater institutional transparency and accountability at all levels of NRNA.

  • Cultural Promotion: Supporting sustainable development initiatives and promoting Nepali identity, language, and culture.

  • Social Responsibility: Strengthening the implementation of social responsibility programs under NRNA ACT, while also launching new, personally driven initiatives to address community needs.

Dhakal believes that if these agendas are successfully implemented at the state level, it will make a significant impact on the broader community. He concludes his statement by calling for collective support:

“With these commitments, I am stepping forward in this election to serve through the Canberra State Committee. I sincerely hope to earn the support, encouragement, and trust of all fellow community members in Canberra.”
