Report from

Kathmandu, Nepal

The Election Commission of Nepal has referred 181 cases of misinformation related to the elections to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police for legal action.

The announcement was made on Friday during the commission’s regular press briefing by spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai.

“These 181 cases, which violate the electoral code of conduct, have been forwarded to the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau for action under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063 (2006),” Bhattarai said. “Additionally, seven cases have been referred to the Telecommunication Authority for violations under its governing act.”

The commission also reported that 40 cases involving violations conducted through websites have been sent to the Press Council, while 47 other cases have been referred to the Central Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee for further action.

Bhattarai noted that although violations of the electoral code have decreased compared to previous periods, the decline has not met the commission’s expectations.
