Albanese Welcomes EU Chief von der Leyen to Australia to Deepen Strategic and Trade Ties
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will host the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during an official visit to Australia from 23 to 25 March 2026, underscoring growing cooperation between Australia and the European Union.
President von der Leyen will be accompanied by EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, with talks expected to focus heavily on advancing bilateral trade and economic security priorities.
Australia and the European Union maintain a strong partnership grounded in shared democratic values and mutual strategic interests. Both sides collaborate across a broad agenda, including rules-based trade, resilient supply chains, security and defence cooperation, climate action, and the development of critical minerals.
The leaders are also expected to discuss emerging global challenges, including the regulation of digital platforms and social media to enhance protections for young people—an issue gaining prominence in both jurisdictions.
The visit marks the seventh meeting between Prime Minister Albanese and President von der Leyen, reflecting the increasing importance of Australia–EU relations at a time of shifting global economic and geopolitical dynamics.
Officials say the discussions will aim to further strengthen ties and explore new opportunities for cooperation in an evolving international landscape.
