Ride-Sharing Crackdown in Nepal’s Capital Targets Unregulated Drivers and Safety Risks
Nepal – Kathmandu traffic police have launched a special enforcement campaign targeting ride-sharing services, resulting in the action against 175 drivers for operating illegally and violating traffic regulations.
The crackdown comes amid a surge in ride-sharing usage in the capital, which authorities say has been accompanied by unauthorized service operations, poor vehicle maintenance, and unsafe practices.
“Drivers were found operating without the required online platform authorization, picking up and dropping off passengers at random locations, and failing to comply with traffic rules,” said SP Nareshraj Subedi, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Traffic Police.
Traffic authorities emphasized that such practices, especially around busy intersections, hospital zones, school areas, and main roads, create congestion and increase the risk of accidents. Drivers are required to obtain proper authorization, maintain their vehicles, carry necessary documents, and follow traffic regulations.
SP Navaraj Adhikari, chief of the Kathmandu Traffic Police, stated that enforcement campaigns would continue to ensure compliance and urged the public to use only legally registered and safely operated ride-sharing services.
Authorities warn that further violations will be met with strict action as the city seeks to improve traffic management and passenger safety.
