Nepal Opposition MP Calls for Treason Investigation into Finance Minister Over Tax Leak Allegations

Kathmandu, Nepal — A senior opposition MP in Nepal has called for an investigation into Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle and suggested that treason charges be considered over allegations that confidential tax policy information may have been leaked before official implementation.

Speaking in Nepal’s House of Representatives on Monday, Gyanendra Shahi, parliamentary leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), questioned how changes to customs and tax rates became known outside government circles.

Shahi argued that details of tax-rate adjustments are typically known only to the finance minister and a limited number of officials. He demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and called for the formation of a ‘parliamentary probe committee’.

The lawmaker also alleged that vehicles involved in customs tax evasion entered Nepal through the Korala and Rasuwagadhi border crossings, raising concerns about whether advance knowledge of tax changes may have been used for financial gain.

The allegations come amid growing scrutiny of Nepal’s customs and taxation system. No official findings have yet been released, and the claims made by Shahi have not been independently verified.

The government and the finance minister have not publicly responded to the accusations at the time of reporting.
