Almost 150 Arrested as ACT Policing Targets Retail Theft Across Canberra
ACT Policing has continued its crackdown on retail crime across Canberra, with 149 people arrested between January and May 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to combat shoplifting, anti-social behaviour, and violence against retail workers.
Police say retail theft remains a significant concern for businesses, employees, and the wider community, prompting increased patrols and close cooperation with retailers across the ACT.
Repeat Alcohol Theft Offender Charged
In January, a 46-year-old man was arrested and charged after allegedly stealing alcohol on 12 separate occasions from stores in Wright and Greenway. The following day, police arrested him again for allegedly breaching his bail conditions and charged him with a further 15 alcohol theft offences across Wright, Greenway, and Belconnen.
Shoplifter Found Carrying Knife
In April, officers conducting patrols at the Westfield Belconnen shopping centre responded to reports of a shoplifter who had verbally abused store staff before leaving the premises. Police located the man at a nearby bus stop, where a search of his belongings allegedly uncovered a knife.
Teenager Charged After Retail Worker Assaulted
In May, a retail employee was allegedly assaulted after confronting a group of youths suspected of stealing items from a store. Police arrested three teenagers in connection with the incident.
One of the teenagers, a 15-year-old girl who was already subject to bail conditions, was charged with assault.
Protecting Retail Workers and the Community
ACT Policing says it will continue working closely with retailers to deter theft, reduce anti-social behaviour, and improve safety for both staff and customers.
Police emphasised that retail workers have the right to perform their duties without fear of intimidation, threats, or violence.
“Everyone should be safe at work, and violence or threats of violence towards store employees will not be tolerated,” ACT Policing said.
The arrests highlight the ongoing focus by ACT Policing on tackling retail-related crime and holding repeat offenders accountable while supporting safer shopping environments across Canberra.
