National Cabinet Extends Fuel Excise Relief and Strengthens H5 Avian Flu Response
The Prime Minister today convened the sixth meeting of National Cabinet since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, with discussions focusing on Australia’s fuel security, cost-of-living pressures, and the national response to H5 avian influenza.
During the meeting, Energy Minister Chris Bowen and Fuel Supply Taskforce Coordinator Anthea Harris provided an update on Australia’s fuel supply outlook. National Cabinet was advised that fuel supplies remain secure in the near term, while governments continue preparations for potential disruptions affecting fuel and fertiliser imports.
To help ease cost-of-living pressures, the Prime Minister announced a one-month extension of the Commonwealth’s fuel excise reduction. State and territory leaders agreed to continue their contributions under the same arrangements as the previous measure, providing temporary relief to motorists facing high fuel prices.
In addition, the Albanese Government will reduce the Heavy Vehicle Road User Charge by 16 cents for the same period. The measure is intended to support Australia’s freight industry and help keep transport costs under control.
National Cabinet also received an update on the recent detection of H5 avian influenza. The Commonwealth is working closely with state and territory governments to coordinate a national response and strengthen biosecurity measures.
The Federal Government has invested $113 million to improve preparedness for H5 avian flu, including an additional $11.2 million announced in the latest Federal Budget. The funding will support surveillance, response planning, and efforts to protect Australia’s agriculture and food supply sectors.
The meeting highlighted the government’s focus on maintaining energy security, supporting households with rising living costs, and safeguarding Australia against emerging biosecurity threats.
