Free TAFE Enrolments Top 800,000 as Skills Training Expands Across Australia

CANBERRA,  More than 814,000 Australians have enrolled in Free TAFE courses since the program was introduced in 2023, with over 258,000 students completing their qualifications, according to new figures released by the Australian Government.

The latest data for the first quarter of 2026 shows continued growth in enrolments across priority industries, including nursing, aged care, construction, cyber security and early childhood education. Construction training recorded an increase of around 15,000 enrolments compared with the previous quarter.

Young Australians aged 24 and under account for 35 per cent of Free TAFE enrolments, while job seekers represent 24 per cent. Regional communities make up 32 per cent of enrolments, with a further two per cent from remote areas.

The Federal Government said the program is helping address national skills shortages by providing Australians with access to vocational education and training without tuition fees.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Free TAFE is helping people gain the skills needed for secure employment and supporting Australia’s future workforce.

The Government has legislated to make Free TAFE permanent, committing to fund 100,000 free training places each year from 2027.
