Australia Unveils AI Framework with New Standards for Data Centres and Creative Rights
CANBERRA- The Australian Government has announced plans to introduce a national artificial intelligence (AI) framework, including new standards for large data centres and stronger protections for Australian creators.
Under the proposed framework, large data centres will be required to fund their own additional power supply, cover the full cost of connecting to the electricity grid, reduce energy use during periods of high demand, and improve water efficiency. The Government will also work with state and territory governments to ensure new data centres are built in suitable locations with input from local communities.
The Government has established the Office of AI within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to oversee the implementation of the new standards. The proposal will be considered by National Cabinet in August, with legislation expected to be introduced early next year.
According to the Government, the framework aims to provide a consistent national approach to regulating large data centres and AI development while supporting economic growth, strengthening national capability and ensuring AI technologies operate in Australia’s interests.
The announcement also includes measures to protect Australian creative works. The Government said it intends to ensure that writers, artists and journalists retain control over how their work is used, with the goal of preventing AI companies from using Australian creative content for AI training without the creator’s permission.
If enacted, the Government says the framework would establish one of the world’s first legislated national regulatory systems for AI infrastructure and large-scale AI training.
