EV Sales Surge as Canberra Expands Charging Network
Australia’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is gaining momentum, with a new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) showing that national EV sales have doubled since February.
Canberra continues to lead the country in EV adoption, with one of Australia’s highest rates of electric vehicle ownership. Lower fuel and maintenance costs, combined with growing public charging infrastructure, are encouraging more households to make the switch.
The ACT now has 180 public EV charging stations and more than 250 charging bays across the territory. A further 40 new charging stations, providing more than 70 additional charging bays, are expected to be installed soon.
New charging sites are being rolled out in key locations including Belconnen, Woden and Tuggeranong, making it easier for residents to charge their vehicles close to where they live, work and shop.
The ACT Government also notes that concerns about EV driving range are often overstated. With the average Canberra commute well within the range of even entry-level electric vehicles, most daily trips can be completed on a single charge.
Further expansion of the public charging network is planned across suburban centres as demand for EVs continues to grow.
The ACT’s approach highlights a practical transition to cleaner transport through increased consumer choice, expanded charging infrastructure and lower running costs for motorists.
