Australia Marks Vietnam Veterans’ Day 2026, Honouring Those Who Served

CANBERRA— Australia is marking Vietnam Veterans’ Day by honouring the more than 60,000 Australians who served in the Vietnam War and remembering those who lost their lives.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the nation was pausing to remember veterans and acknowledge the lasting impact of the conflict on those who served.

The commemoration comes 60 years after the Battle of Long Tan, one of Australia’s costliest battles of the Vietnam War.

In a Vietnam Veterans’ Day statement, Albanese honoured those who died as well as those who returned home, including veterans who continued to carry the physical and emotional burden of their wartime experiences.

“ We honour you. We respect you. We thank you,” Albanese said, paying tribute to the courage, camaraderie, integrity and character of Australian veterans.

He also called on Australians to remember the sacrifices of those who served and the experiences of veterans who returned from the conflict.

The Prime Minister concluded the message with the traditional remembrance: “Lest we forget.”

Vietnam Veterans’ Day is observed annually in Australia on August 18, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966.
