Melbourne councils open community grant rounds as new limits take effect

Community organisations in Melbourne are being encouraged to apply for council funding, with several grant rounds open and one council introducing a monthly cap on applications.

The City of Melbourne says it invests $15.2 million annually across grants and sponsorship programs supporting business, events, community and the arts.

Its Community Events Grants offer not-for-profit organisations up to $10,000 for events that are open to the public and held within the City of Melbourne municipality. Under the program guidelines, funded events must not exceed 5,000 attendees.

The City of Melbourne is also updating its grants and sponsorship framework to align with the Council Plan 2025–2029.

At Moonee Valley City Council, Responsive Grants are limited to 30 applications a month from September 2026. The council says once 30 applications are received the round closes and draft applications cannot be submitted, and it has advised groups to apply early.

Moonee Valley offers monthly grants, annual grants, multi-year partnerships and grants for urgent or unforeseen circumstances. Responsive Grant applications are open year-round from the second of each month.
