Commission launches RAISE initiative to boost AI in science research
The European Commission has launched the RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe) pledging initiative to mobilise private-sector and philanthropic support for European researchers working in artificial intelligence and science.
The initiative aims to bring in-kind contributions from industry and charities, including access to frontier AI models, computing capacity, research software licences, data, training and other resources needed to advance scientific discovery. It also aims to connect scientific excellence with technological expertise and resources to speed up progress in AI for science.
Initial pledges have been made by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Nvidia, Elsevier, Sanofi, Frontiers, Mistral, and Google DeepMind. The initiative remains open to further contributions. Organisations must make concrete pledges showing sustained support for AI in science beyond their direct commercial interests.
A significant early partnership is between Mistral AI and CERN, which are developing what is expected to become the largest foundation model in physics. The collaboration reflects the initiative’s aim of bringing together Europe’s scientific excellence and industrial innovation.
The initiative will be reviewed annually, with pledges and progress presented at future editions of the European AI in Science Summit. The launch took place at the summit in Dublin.
The Commission has also released updated guidance on the responsible use of generative AI in research, and launched the RAISE Hub, Forum and Observatory as connected platforms to bring together information, resources and communities working on AI in science in Europe.
The initiative builds on the European Strategy for AI in Science launched by the Commission in October 2025, which aims to strengthen Europe’s technological and scientific leadership and boost competitiveness.
