Commonwealth leaders reaffirm commitments to democracy, human rights, international law, sustainable development and climate action during the meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has joined Commonwealth leaders and representatives at the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), held in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, from 1 to 4 November.

The meeting brought together leaders from across the Commonwealth to discuss shared international challenges and opportunities, with a focus on strengthening partnerships, trade, investment and sustainable development.

During the summit, Commonwealth leaders adopted the CHOGM Communiqué, reaffirming their commitment to democracy, human rights, the rule of law, international law, sustainable development and stronger global action on climate change. Prime Minister Albanese also held discussions with several Commonwealth leaders, including the Prime Ministers of Antigua and Barbuda, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Discussions focused on shared priorities, including democratic governance, free trade, artificial intelligence (AI) safety and international cooperation to address climate change. The meeting also provided an opportunity for Australia to strengthen its diplomatic relationships and advance its international priorities.

Prime Minister Albanese used the occasion to promote Australia’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–30 term. Australia’s campaign reflects its ambition to play a greater role in international peace, security and cooperation through the United Nations.

The 2026 CHOGM was held under the theme ‘Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth’, bringing together representatives from the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries.

The summit highlighted the importance of cooperation among member nations in addressing global challenges and creating opportunities for shared prosperity.
