ACT Police Nab Multiple Speeding Drivers, Alleged Drug Driver During Road Safety Operation
Canberra, ACT- ACT Policing has taken enforcement action against several motorists following a series of speeding and drug-driving incidents across Canberra over the past few days.
On Thursday evening (9 July), Road Policing officers detected a 17-year-old Bonner man driving a black Volkswagen Golf GTI at 114 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Horse Park Drive, Throsby. The provisional licence holder received a $750 Traffic Infringement Notice, four demerit points, and will have his licence suspended for 90 days due to the accumulation of demerit points.
On Friday night (10 July), officers intercepted a white Volkswagen Polo GTI travelling at 109 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on John Gorton Drive, Wright. The 17-year-old Gungahlin driver, who held a provisional licence, was fined $750, issued four demerit points, and cautioned for failing to display P-plates. His licence will also be suspended for 90 days.
Later that evening, police stopped a white Toyota Corolla after it was allegedly speeding and overtaking several vehicles on John Gorton Drive. The 20-year-old Kambah driver was recorded travelling at 97 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. A roadside drug screening test returned a positive indication for a prescribed drug, and the driver will be summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on charges of speeding and drug driving.
In another incident early on Saturday morning (11 July), officers intercepted a black Audi Q5 travelling at 129 km/h in an 80 km/h zone along Yarra Glen and Adelaide Avenue. The 23-year-old Weetangera driver had his licence immediately suspended for 180 days and was issued a $1,891 infringement notice along with six demerit points for exceeding the speed limit by 45 km/h.
ACT Policing said the incidents highlight the ongoing dangers of speeding and drug-impaired driving and reaffirmed its commitment to proactive road safety enforcement across the Territory.
