Albanese heads to Commonwealth summit to press UN seat bid

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will travel to Antigua and Barbuda from 31 October to 4 November to attend the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where he plans to advance Australia’s campaign for a United Nations Security Council seat in 2029–30.‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍

The meeting will bring together representatives from more than 50 of the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries under the theme of “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth”. The Commonwealth collectively represents 2.7 billion people across advanced and developing economies.

The visit marks Albanese’s second CHOGM and the first time an Australian prime minister has travelled to the Caribbean since 2009. He previously attended the meeting in Samoa in 2024.‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍

According to Prime Minister Albanese, the forum will allow Australia to work with Commonwealth partners on shared challenges including climate change, ocean preservation, trade, investment, and artificial intelligence. “Our connection to the Commonwealth is deep and enduring – 3.3 million Australians were born in another Commonwealth country, which connects us through families, businesses, culture and sport,” he said.‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍
