Canberra, 21 September 2025 – Australia has officially recognised Palestine as an independent and sovereign state, marking a significant shift in its Middle East policy. The announcement came through a joint statement from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

By granting recognition, Australia acknowledged the long-held aspirations of the Palestinian people for statehood. The move was coordinated with Canada and the United Kingdom, with the aim of revitalising efforts towards a two-state solution. The immediate focus, according to the statement, is on securing a ceasefire in Gaza and ensuring the release of hostages taken during the October 2023 attacks.

The government reaffirmed that a two-state solution remains the only sustainable path to peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. The Palestinian Authority, in turn, has reiterated its recognition of Israel’s right to exist and pledged reforms, including democratic elections, financial transparency, and governance improvements.

The statement stressed that the militant group Hamas must have no role in Palestine’s future governance. Australia also indicated that steps towards establishing diplomatic relations, including embassies, will depend on the Palestinian Authority’s progress on reforms.

International partners are currently working on a broader peace plan that will support Gaza’s reconstruction, strengthen Palestine’s state capacity, and guarantee Israel’s security. The involvement of the Arab League and the United States is considered critical to this process.

Australia described the recognition as a step towards a more peaceful Middle East, highlighting it as both a hope and a right shared by all humanity.
