ABF Launches National Crackdown on Migrant Worker Exploitation in Hospitality

The Australian Border Force (ABF) has launched a major six-month national operation targeting the exploitation of migrant workers in the hospitality industry. Led by the Department of Home Affairs’ Sponsor Monitoring Unit (SMU), over 100 workplaces across all states and territories will be visited, many for the first time.

SMU officers, working with the Fair Work Ombudsman, are investigating cases of underpayment, unlawful deductions, and excessive work hours. Over 30 employers are already under investigation, with more than 50 venues subject to unannounced inspections.

SMU National Superintendent Jason Boyd said the operation is uncovering troubling trends, including employers charging migrant workers for sponsorship costs — a violation of Australian laws.

New compliance powers and tougher penalties introduced on 1 July 2024 aim to deter abuse. Employers found exploiting workers face serious consequences, including fines and civil prosecution.

Reports of suspicious activity can be made anonymously via Border Watch.
