Victoria to Introduce 20% Rego Rebate and Half-Price Public Transport from 1 June

Victoria–Victorian drivers will be able to claim a 20% rebate on vehicle registration fees starting 1 June, as part of a state government initiative aimed at reducing transport costs and easing cost-of-living pressures.

Eligible residents can receive up to $186 for a single vehicle, while households with two registered vehicles may claim up to $372. The rebate applies to light vehicles registered in an individual’s name, including cars, utes, motorbikes, and other vehicles under 4.5 tonnes.

The rebate covers registration fees paid between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026. Each resident may apply for up to two vehicles registered in their name. Applications open at 9:00am on 1 June and close on 31 July.

Applicants must apply through the Service Victoria platform or via the app Service Victoria, providing their vehicle registration number, driver licence details (or VicRoads customer number), and bank account information. Payments will be made via direct bank transfer, with most processed within 30 days. Importantly, the rebate applies whether registration is paid in full or through instalments.

At the same time, Victoria’s free public transport policy will end on 31 May. From 1 June, a statewide half-price fare system will begin and run until 1 January 2027.

Under the new scheme, the maximum daily fare will drop from $11.40 to $5.70, with the government estimating savings of more than $850 for regular commuters over the promotion period. Unlike the rego rebate, passengers will not need to apply, as discounted fares will automatically apply when tapping on.

Residents are encouraged to check eligibility and apply via Service Victoria.
