As the chill of winter fades, Canberra is preparing to put on a show that few other cities can match. This spring, the capital will host a season of festivals and events that highlight its natural beauty, cultural ties and sporting spirit.
The centrepiece, Floriade (13 September – 12 October), has long been more than just a flower display. With over a million blooms transforming Commonwealth Park, it stands as a symbol of renewal and creativity. Beyond the dazzling tulip beds, the festival has grown into a community hub — with markets, food stalls, live music, and workshops adding depth to the experience. For those who think flowers are only a daytime delight, Night Fest (2 – 5 October) will prove otherwise, bathing the gardens in artistic light and offering Canberrans and visitors alike a chance to see the park in an entirely new glow.
October also invites reflection on the city’s global connections through the Canberra Nara Candle Festival (25 October). Thousands of flickering candles will light up the night, honouring the friendship between Canberra and its Japanese sister city, Nara. It is a gentle reminder that diplomacy and culture often shine brightest not in boardrooms, but in shared celebrations under the open sky.
And for sports lovers, the month culminates with a blockbuster at Manuka Oval, as Australia takes on India in the Men’s T20 International on 29 October. The match will not only draw crowds of passionate fans but will once again spotlight Canberra’s growing reputation as a host for world-class sporting events.
