$1.1 Billion Boost to Upgrade WA Freight Network and Support Future Westport Port

The Albanese Federal Government and Western Australian Cook Government have announced a major $1.1 billion infrastructure investment to strengthen freight connectivity and support the future Westport container terminal project.

The funding will deliver critical upgrades to Anketell Road, a key freight corridor linking industrial areas in Kwinana to the Kwinana Freeway, improving trade efficiency and reducing congestion across Perth’s southern suburbs.

Major Road Upgrades Planned

The first stage of the project includes:

  • Expansion of Anketell Road to four lanes between Leath Road and Abercrombie Road
  • Construction of a grade-separated interchange at Rockingham Road
  • Improved freight movement efficiency for heavy vehicles
  • Reduced congestion on local residential roads
  • Enhanced road safety for motorists and truck drivers

Officials say the upgrades will shift heavy freight traffic away from suburban streets, easing pressure on local communities.

Strengthening WA’s Trade Future

The investment is part of a broader strategy to support the Western Trade Coast, one of Western Australia’s key industrial and logistics hubs.

The upgraded infrastructure will improve access to future port facilities, support housing and industrial growth, and strengthen supply chains across mining, defence, and export sectors.

Economic Impact

According to government statements, the project is expected to:

  • Boost long-term economic growth
  • Improve freight productivity and reduce transport costs
  • Support job creation in construction and logistics
  • Reduce emissions through more efficient freight routing

The project also aligns with major infrastructure developments including METRONET, the Tonkin Highway Corridor, and the national Outback Way.

Leaders Speak

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the investment would unlock long-term economic benefits and strengthen Australia’s trade capacity.

Premier Roger Cook described the project as a “once-in-a-generation infrastructure upgrade” that will support WA’s economic future and industrial growth.

Infrastructure and transport leaders highlighted benefits including reduced congestion, safer roads, and improved freight efficiency for businesses and residents.

Additional Funding

The announcement follows a $552 million federal contribution, matched by the WA Government, along with a separate $350 million commitment to upgrade the Kwinana Freeway.
