Canberra, October 9, 2025 — The Australian Government has welcomed the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a plan aimed at restoring peace to Gaza.

In a joint statement issued by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Australia described the agreement as a “much needed step towards peace” after more than two years of conflict that resulted in heavy civilian casualties and the prolonged holding of hostages.

“Australia has consistently been part of international calls for a ceasefire, return of the hostages, and the unimpeded flow of aid to Gaza,” the statement read.

The government urged all parties involved to respect the terms of the newly signed plan, while expressing gratitude to President Trump for his diplomatic efforts. The statement also acknowledged the “important role of Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye” in facilitating the agreement.

Australia reaffirmed its strong support for provisions in the peace plan that would prevent Hamas from playing a role in Gaza’s future governance.

“There is a very long road to recovery in Gaza, securing long-term peace and building the Palestinian state,” the statement continued.

Albanese and Wong reiterated Australia’s commitment to working with international partners to promote “a just and enduring two-state solution.”
