Albanese and Trump Agree on New Framework to Boost Australia–US Critical Minerals Cooperation

21 Oct 2025 — Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and U.S. President Donald J. Trump have held their first bilateral meeting at the White House, focusing on opportunities to strengthen economic and strategic ties between Australia and the United States.

The leaders announced a new United States–Australia Framework for Securing the Supply in the Mining and Processing of Critical Minerals and Rare Earths, aimed at supporting both countries’ manufacturing and technology sectors.

The framework is designed to enhance cooperation in the development and processing of critical minerals, which are essential for renewable energy technologies, defence capabilities, and high-tech industries. It also seeks to improve supply chain security and reduce dependence on other markets.

In a joint statement, the two leaders said the agreement represents a step forward in advancing shared economic and security interests. They reaffirmed the importance of the Australia–U.S. alliance, which has underpinned regional stability for more than seven decades.

Mr Albanese said the partnership would help create new opportunities for Australian industry. “Australia’s critical minerals are vital to powering emerging technologies, and this initiative ensures we can continue working closely with the United States to build resilient supply chains,” he said.

President Trump said the framework would benefit both nations by supporting innovation and ensuring access to key materials required for future industries.

The meeting also covered broader discussions on trade, defence cooperation, and regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
