Australia and Indonesia Announce Historic New Security Treaty on HMAS Canberra
Canberra, Australia:
Today, a historic milestone was reached in Australia-Indonesia relations as leaders from both nations gathered on HMAS Canberra to announce the conclusion of negotiations on a new bilateral security treaty. The agreement is designed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Australian officials highlighted that the relationship with Indonesia is built on friendship, trust, and mutual respect. The new treaty reinforces this foundation and establishes mechanisms for regular consultations at both the leader and ministerial levels on security matters.
The treaty builds on the legacy of the landmark security agreement signed by the Keating and Suharto governments three decades ago, the 2006 Lombok Treaty, and last year’s Defence Cooperation Agreement. Key commitments under the new treaty include identifying and undertaking mutually beneficial security activities and consulting on measures if either country faces security threats.
Officials emphasized that this agreement signals a new era in the Australia-Indonesia partnership, reflecting both nations’ commitment to act together to ensure regional peace and stability.
