2026 ACT Australian of the Year Awards Announced
KNA, Canberra:
The winners of the 2026 ACT Australian of the Year Awards have been revealed, celebrating outstanding individuals who have made remarkable contributions to their communities. These ACT recipients will now represent the territory as finalists in the national awards on 25 January 2026.
🏅 2026 ACT Australian of the Year – Professor Rose McGready
Professor McGready has dedicated more than 30 years to delivering essential healthcare to displaced communities along the Thailand–Myanmar border. Her work establishing local clinics and pioneering malaria research has saved countless lives and informed global health standards.
🏅 2026 ACT Senior Australian of the Year – Heather Reid AM
Heather Reid has championed women’s football for decades. She helped build the sport from the grassroots up, played a key role in establishing strong football structures in the ACT, and continues to support players and coaches through mentorship and her dedicated bursary.
🏅 2026 ACT Young Australian of the Year – Sita Sargeant
Founder of She Shapes History, Sita spotlights the forgotten stories of influential women through tours, digital media and publications. Her work has helped thousands learn about women’s contributions to Australian history.
🏅 2026 ACT Local Hero – Ben Alexander
Former Wallabies player Ben Alexander co-founded Running for Resilience (R4R) to help build a mentally stronger community. Through weekly runs, events and outreach, R4R supports people to stay connected and prioritise their wellbeing.
These inspiring individuals now move forward to the national stage as Australia prepares for the 2026 awards ceremony.
