Melbourne Man and Teen Charged Over False Identity Use on Australian Domestic Flight

A 29-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy from Melbourne have been charged after allegedly using false identities to board a domestic flight in Australia, authorities said.

The pair boarded a flight from Sydney to Melbourne on April 14, 2026. However, the situation escalated while the aircraft was taxiing, when they allegedly became verbally abusive toward airline staff after being instructed to remain seated.

Due to safety concerns, the pilot returned the aircraft to the terminal and requested assistance from the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Officers met the plane at the gate and escorted the two passengers off the aircraft. Upon further investigation, police discovered that the names on their boarding passes did not match their official identification documents.

Both individuals have been charged with travelling using false identification information, an offence under Australian federal law that carries a maximum penalty of up to 12 months’ imprisonment.

The 15-year-old was refused bail and appeared before a children’s court in New South Wales on April 15. Meanwhile, the 29-year-old man was granted bail and is scheduled to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney on May 11.

AFP Acting Inspector Craig Bruce stated that the use of fraudulent identity documents is taken seriously, as it can be linked to broader criminal activity.

“Providing false identity details when flying can pose significant security risks and may be used to evade law enforcement,” he said.

Authorities emphasised the importance of accurate passenger identification and confirmed ongoing cooperation between law enforcement and airlines to ensure aviation safety.
