Australia Joins Global Call to Address Strait of Hormuz Crisis, Urges De-escalation

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that Australia had participated in a multinational discussion with over 40 countries regarding rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

The meeting, convened by Yvette Cooper and involving organisations such as the International Maritime Organization, focused on ensuring the safety and accessibility of the waterway.

Wong indicated that recent actions attributed to Iran, including disruptions to maritime traffic and reported attacks on commercial vessels and energy infrastructure, had contributed to instability in global energy markets and increased fuel costs.

She stated that participating nations had expressed concern over the situation and called for adherence to international law, including obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which supports freedom of navigation.

Wong emphasised that Australia is not engaging in offensive military action and does not intend to deploy troops, reaffirming the government’s commitment to de-escalation and diplomatic solutions.
