Keeping Culture Alive Abroad: A Nepali Woman’s Journey Through Leadership and Literature
In today’s global landscape, Nepali women are no longer confined to traditional domestic roles. They are increasingly establishing their identities on the international stage, contributing significantly to society, literature, and leadership. One such inspiring figure is Mahata Ghimire Chapagain.
Originally from Jhapa district in Nepal, Chapagain is currently based in Canberra, Australia. Despite living abroad, she has remained deeply connected to her language, culture, and community, making meaningful contributions across multiple fields.
Between 2019 and 2023, Chapagain was actively involved with the Australian-Nepal Friendship Society (ANFS). During her tenure, she served as a Language Coordinator, where she led the Nepali community school and also took on the role of principal. Through her efforts, she played a key role in preserving and promoting the Nepali language among younger generations in Australia.
“Preserving our language and culture while living abroad means preserving our identity,” Chapagain said. “It is not just about teaching—it is a responsibility tied to our existence.”
Her leadership extended beyond educational initiatives. As Vice President of ANFS, she successfully coordinated and led various social and cultural programs, earning recognition as a committed and trusted community leader.
Literature forms another important dimension of Chapagain’s life. Her literary journey began in Grade 4 and has continued ever since. She has been a lifetime member of the International Nepali Literary Society for nearly a decade and currently serves as President of its Canberra chapter. She also actively participates in literary events across major Australian cities, including Sydney and Melbourne.
Her writings primarily focus on women’s empowerment, raising awareness against violence, social consciousness, and messages of positive change. Through poetry, stories, and other literary forms, she continues to use her voice to inspire and educate.
“Literature is not just a medium of expression for me—it is also a responsibility to awaken society,” she said.
Her debut poetry collection, Prashnai Prashnako Pahad (“A Mountain of Questions”), was published in 2018 and received positive responses from readers. She is currently working on her next collection.
In addition to her literary and social work, Chapagain serves as President of the Jhapa Society Canberra, where she plays an active role in uniting the community and organizing social, cultural, and charitable initiatives.
She is also a successful entrepreneur. Through her business, Manshwi Collection, she promotes handicrafts and traditional cultural attire while supporting students facing financial hardship—demonstrating a strong sense of social responsibility.
“Business should not be only about profit—it should also serve society,” Chapagain said.
Living far from her homeland, Mahata Ghimire Chapagain continues to stay rooted in her heritage while making impactful contributions abroad. Her journey stands not only as a story of personal success but also as a powerful example of dedication to community, culture, and women’s empowerment.
