Government Steps In with $3 Million Support to Protect Liberty Bell Bay Jobs
The Australian and Tasmanian Governments have announced joint action to support workers at Liberty Bell Bay during its ongoing sale process, reinforcing their commitment to protecting jobs and maintaining critical manufacturing capability.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff confirmed that administrators EY have accepted a $3 million loan offer, jointly funded on a 50:50 basis by both governments. The funding aims to provide immediate support for workers while the facility undergoes an expedited sale process.
The financial assistance is designed to keep the workforce intact, safeguarding highly specialised skills and improving the chances of a successful sale and timely restart under new ownership. The move comes amid ongoing uncertainty for workers and the wider Bell Bay community.
Liberty Bell Bay holds national significance as Australia’s only domestic producer of manganese alloy—an essential component in steelmaking used across defence, construction, and mining industries.
This latest support builds on earlier action by the Tasmanian Government, which provided a $20 million loan to secure ore supply following commitments from GFG Alliance, the facility’s owner, to restart operations. However, despite these commitments, operations remained limited before the company entered administration.
Prime Minister Albanese emphasised the importance of backing Australian manufacturing, stating the government is committed to supporting workers, families, and regional communities.
Premier Rockliff highlighted the broader economic impact, noting the importance of manufacturing jobs to Tasmania’s economy and the nation’s industrial strength. He also acknowledged the coordinated efforts between state and federal authorities, local representatives, and the community.
Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres described the funding as a positive step but acknowledged further work is needed to secure the facility’s future.
Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to working closely together to support workers, strengthen Australia’s industrial resilience, and achieve the best possible outcome for Liberty Bell Bay and the surrounding community.
