Motorcycle Seized After Alleged 162km/h Speeding in an 80km/h zone in Canberra

A 19-year-old man from Gordon has had his provisional driver’s licence immediately suspended and his motorcycle seized after allegedly being caught riding at 162km/h in an 80km/h zone in Canberra.

According to ACT Policing, the incident occurred at about 8:30pm on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, when ACT Road Policing officers were patrolling Adelaide Avenue in Deakin. Police allege they observed a motorcycle travelling southbound at a speed significantly above the posted speed limit.

Officers further allege the rider continued to travel dangerously, overtaking other vehicles at high speed. Police recorded the motorcycle travelling at 162km/h, more than double the legal speed limit for the road.

The motorcycle was stopped a short time later on Yamba Drive in Garran.

The 19-year-old rider’s provisional licence was immediately suspended for 90 days, and the motorcycle was seized under ACT road safety laws. Police investigations into the incident are continuing.

ACT Policing is appealing for dash-cam footage from motorists who witnessed the motorcycle or captured its movements on Adelaide Avenue, Deakin, or Yamba Drive, Garran, between 8:30pm and 8:40pm on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.

Authorities urge anyone with relevant footage or information to contact ACT Policing to assist with the investigation.
