Australia Accelerates Project Approvals Under Environmental Reform Plan

Canberra, Australia — The Australian Government has announced a A$45 million initiative to speed up environmental approvals by strengthening cooperation with states and territories.

The funding will support new bilateral agreements allowing state and territory governments to carry out environmental assessments on behalf of the Commonwealth, reducing duplication and shortening approval timelines for major projects, including energy, housing, and resources developments.

Officials say the reforms aim to balance efficiency with environmental protection. All projects must still meet national standards, with oversight from the new National Environmental Protection Agency, set to begin operations on July 1.

The changes are part of broader reforms led by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water to modernise Australia’s environmental laws while supporting economic growth.
