Australia Secures Emergency Fuel Supplies to Counter Global Crisis

The Australian Government has secured major new fuel shipments to safeguard national supply, as global instability continues to disrupt energy markets.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the government has arranged three additional shipments, including 100 million litres of jet fuel and 50 million litres of diesel, destined for Brisbane, Perth, and Darwin.

These shipments add to eight previously announced deliveries, coordinated with energy partners including BP Australia, Ampol, and Viva Energy. All shipments are expected to arrive across May and June.

In total, Australia has now secured:

  • Over 450 million litres of diesel
  • 100 million litres of jet fuel

The move aims to ensure continuity across key sectors, including transport, aviation, and freight.

Prime Minister Albanese said the government is acting urgently to protect Australians from international disruptions.

“We are working day and night, here and abroad, to shield Australians from the worst impacts of a war on the other side of the world,” he said.

Supporting Industry and Travel

Trade Minister Don Farrell highlighted the impact on essential workers:

“This will keep FIFO workers flying, truckers driving, and our nation moving.”

Energy Minister Chris Bowen added that the government is continuing to strengthen fuel supply chains through industry partnerships.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Catherine King noted that this marks the first use of strategic reserves for jet fuel since the conflict began, providing certainty for airlines and freight services.

More Supplies on the Way

The government is also working through strategic reserve powers to secure fertiliser imports, with further shipments expected in the coming weeks.

Officials say these measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure Australia remains operational, connected, and resilient amid global uncertainty.
