ACT Public Schools to Close on 11 June Amid Industrial Action
Canberra, 2 June 2026 — All ACT public schools, including specialist schools and preschools, will be closed for the entire day on Thursday, 11 June 2026, due to protected industrial action by members of the Australian Education Union.
The ACT Education Directorate announced the closure, stating that a significant number of school staff are expected to participate in a full-day work stoppage. As a result, authorities cannot guarantee safe and appropriate supervision for students and have decided to close all public schools in the interest of student and staff safety.
Families have been advised that no onsite supervision will be available on the day. Schools will communicate any changes to assessments, excursions, or other planned activities affected by the closure. Student assessments may experience disruptions; however, the Directorate has assured families that students will not be disadvantaged.
Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) providers have been informed of the closure and will contact families regarding service arrangements for the day.
In the letter to families, Director-General Jo Wood acknowledged the impact of school closures on parents and carers, noting that this is the second disruption to the school term. The Directorate said it provided early notice to help families make alternative arrangements and reiterated that student and staff wellbeing remains its highest priority.
The Education Directorate also confirmed its commitment to continuing negotiations with staff and unions toward a new Enterprise Agreement while respecting employees’ rights to take protected industrial action.
