Fair Work Ombudsman and Border Force Conduct Surprise Inspections in South-East Queensland

The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) and the Australian Border Force (ABF) have carried out surprise inspections at around 40 businesses across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay to ensure migrant workers are receiving their correct pay and entitlements.

The inspections, which began on 2 June, focused mainly on fast-food outlets, restaurants and cafés, particularly in Sunnybank Hills, Sunnybank and Fortitude Valley. Officials reviewed wage records, timesheets and payslips, with a focus on businesses employing workers on subclass 482 skilled visas.

Fair Work Ombudsman Anna Booth said migrant workers can be especially vulnerable to workplace exploitation and reminded visa holders that they have the same workplace rights as all Australian workers. ABF Commander John Taylor warned employers that exploiting migrant workers or misusing the visa system can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment and substantial fines.

Investigations are continuing following the inspections.
