Australia Welcomes US–Iran Agreement, Calls for Lasting Peace in Middle East
The Australian Government has welcomed a new agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability in the Middle East.
In a joint statement released on 15 June 2026, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia has consistently supported de-escalation and an end to the conflict affecting the region, including Lebanon.
The government noted that the agreement includes measures aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring freedom of navigation, which could help ease pressure on global energy markets and trade routes. Australia also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining adequate fuel supplies and protecting Australians from the economic impacts of regional instability.
Australia encouraged all parties to continue pursuing peace through dialogue and diplomacy, while stressing the importance of addressing international concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The statement also acknowledged the mediation efforts of Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and other countries involved in facilitating discussions.
