AI Detects Nearly 5,000 Threats Against Australian Labor Politicians in Three Months
CANBERRA, Australia — Australian Finance Minister Katy Gallagher has revealed that Labor MPs and senators are using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor their social media accounts after an analysis identified almost 5,000 threats and violent comments directed at 22 Labor politicians over a three-month period.
Gallagher said the findings highlighted a broader problem of online abuse that extends beyond politics and affects workers across Australia. “It’s not just about politicians’ working life. What’s happening to us is no different to what’s happening to a lot of other workers across Australia,” she said.
She added that the message was clear: “enough’s enough.”
The use of AI to monitor social media activity reflects growing efforts to identify and assess threatening content directed at public figures online. The findings also raise broader questions about online safety, the impact of digital abuse and the protection available to people facing threats through social media platforms.
