Australia and Fiji Sign Historic Treaties to Deepen Security and Economic Partnership
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka have signed two landmark treaties in Suva—the Vuvale Union and the Ocean of Peace Alliance—marking one of the most significant bilateral agreements in the history of Australia–Fiji relations.
The Australian Government said the treaties will strengthen cooperation in security, economic development, education, skills, and people-to-people ties while enhancing regional prosperity, resilience, and stability across the Pacific.
The Vuvale Union establishes an ambitious framework to deepen integration between the two countries in areas including defence, trade, workforce development, and institutional cooperation.
The Ocean of Peace Alliance, a mutual defence treaty, commits Australia and Fiji to support one another during times of major need. It is Fiji’s first formal defence alliance and Australia’s fourth, reflecting their longstanding partnership and shared commitment to regional security.
The agreements are also the first treaties designed to give practical effect to the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration, strengthening the Pacific region’s capacity to respond to shared challenges such as transnational crime and climate change.
During the visit, Prime Minister Albanese was awarded the Honorary Companion of the Order of Fiji, the country’s highest civilian honour, in recognition of his contribution to Australia–Fiji relations and Pacific regional security.
Prime Minister Albanese also launched the Pacific Australia Skills program in Fiji and officially opened the Vuvale Skills Hub, a refurbished vocational training facility aimed at expanding education, skills development, and future economic opportunities.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Albanese described the agreements as “one of the most significant endeavours Australia has undertaken with any country,” adding that the level of ambition reflects the close “Vuvale” (family) relationship built on trust, loyalty, understanding, and mutual respect.
