Nepali Congress; Nepal, President Gagan Thapa Resigns Following Election Defeat
Gagan Thapa, President of the Nepali Congress, Political party of Nepal has resigned from his position following his defeat in the recent parliamentary elections.
According to party sources, Thapa submitted his resignation to Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma after losing the House of Representatives election held on February 21. He was defeated in Sarlahi-4 by Amaresh Kumar Singh of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Thapa, who had previously been elected from Kathmandu-4, contested this time from a different constituency but failed to retain his parliamentary seat. The election saw a significant shift in Nepal’s political landscape, with the Rastriya Swatantra Party securing nearly a two-thirds majority.
The Nepali Congress, which finished second, managed to secure only 38 seats in total—18 through direct elections and 20 through the proportional representation system.
Although Thapa had been preparing to step down following the election results, several party leaders across different levels had urged him not to resign. He was elected party president unopposed during a special general convention held prior to the elections.
The party is yet to make a formal decision on his resignation. A Central Working Committee meeting has been scheduled for Friday to discuss the matter.
