NSW to Launch National Gun Buyback as Government Defends Tougher Firearm Laws

New South Wales will become the first Australian state to begin the National Gun Buyback, with the program set to start on 2 November.

The NSW Government says the initiative will remove more firearms from circulation and ensure they are safely destroyed, describing it as the largest program of its kind to remove dangerous guns from the community in almost three decades.

The announcement comes as the state government continues to defend stronger firearm laws introduced following the antisemitic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach.

The government has argued that strengthening gun laws is an important part of improving community safety and reducing the number of dangerous firearms in circulation.

However, One Nation has indicated it wants to reverse some of the recent firearm-law changes, prompting the NSW Government to call for political parties to work together rather than return to previous debates over gun regulation.

The government has acknowledged that no single law can eliminate every risk associated with firearms.

However, it maintains that reducing the number of dangerous guns in the community can help make NSW safer.

The National Gun Buyback is expected to form a significant part of the broader effort to reduce firearms in the community, with the program beginning in NSW on 2 November.
