Canberra Residents Face Road Closures and Changing Weather This Week

Canberra residents are being urged to plan ahead this week as several major road closures, construction projects and maintenance works continue across the ACT.

Motorists will face a number of overnight traffic disruptions, including works on Commonwealth Avenue, Northbourne Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue.

The Parkes Way off-ramp onto Commonwealth Avenue southbound will be closed from 9pm Wednesday, August 19, until 5am Thursday, August 20, to allow concrete barriers to be removed. Further overnight diversions on Commonwealth Avenue are scheduled from August 23 to 26 for watermain installation.

Northbourne Avenue will also experience closures later in August. Northbound lanes between Vernon Circle and Alinga Street will close from 8pm Friday, August 21, until 5am Monday, August 24, followed by a southbound closure from August 28 to 31. The closures are required for retaining wall construction.

Edinburgh Avenue will be fully closed between The Mews and Knowles Place from 8pm Thursday, August 27, until 5am Monday, August 31, for rail installation and civil works. Pedestrian access and some local vehicle access will remain available.

Other major projects are continuing across Canberra. Temporary traffic lights are operating on the Monaro Highway at Lanyon Drive, while lane reductions may occur during weekday off-peak periods. The William Hovell Drive duplication project also continues, with reduced speed limits, traffic management measures and pedestrian detours in place.

Weather conditions are also expected to change during the week. Canberra is forecast to have foggy mornings and mild conditions initially, with temperatures potentially reaching 18°C on Wednesday. More unsettled conditions, including rain and gusty winds, are expected from Thursday through Saturday before conditions improve.

Maintenance crews will also be working across Canberra on weed control, tree pruning and removals, horticultural maintenance and street sweeping. Work is scheduled across suburbs in Belconnen, Gungahlin, Central Canberra, Tuggeranong and the Woden, Molonglo and Weston Creek areas.

Several parks, reserves and public facilities are also undergoing maintenance and upgrades. Works include repairs to walking trails at Bruce Ridge Nature Reserve, habitat improvement at Mount Majura Nature Reserve and ongoing fence upgrades at Mulligans Flat.

A number of community events are also scheduled, including the Canberra Community Disability Expo on August 19 and sporting events later in August.

Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time, follow temporary traffic signs and check conditions before travelling through affected areas.
