NT Government Demands Accountability After Charles Darwin University Training Failure Impacts Students

Darwin, Australia – 23 July 2026

Northern Territory Education and Training Minister Jo Hersey has demanded accountability from Charles Darwin University (CDU) after around 100 students were found to have missed a required unit of competency in their Electrotechnology training.

The issue was identified through an independent and comprehensive audit ordered by the Minister in February, following previous concerns involving failures in CDU’s Carpentry curriculum.

CDU has advised that final student numbers are still being confirmed but has assured the NT Government that no licensed electricians, air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics, or apprentices have been affected.

Minister Hersey said those responsible for the training failure must be held accountable and expressed support for students, businesses, and families impacted by the issue.

“Further failure is not an option, and reform needs to be expedited,” Ms Hersey said.

CDU is working to identify all affected students, who will be contacted from Monday. The Minister has requested an urgent update from the university early next week.

The NT Government has begun developing a plan to strengthen CDU’s governance, improve alignment with industry needs, and establish clearer expectations for government-funded training programs.

As the Territory’s largest public training provider, CDU plays a critical role in developing skilled workers and supporting economic growth, the Minister said.
