Queensland launches programs to support 4,500 new construction apprentices

The Queensland Government has announced two major initiatives aimed at strengthening the state’s construction workforce, supporting up to 4,500 new apprentices across the building industry.

The new TradieStart program will fund 2,500 apprenticeships in construction, plumbing, engineering and electrical trades. Eligible small businesses hiring their first apprentice can receive $10,000, with an additional $4,000 for apprentices aged over 21 and up to $2,000 more for employing apprentices from priority groups, including veterans, women, people with disability, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Government is also extending the Small Business Apprenticeship Program, providing wage subsidies to support another 2,000 construction apprentices.

The initiatives are being delivered in partnership with Construction Skills Queensland to help address ongoing workforce shortages and meet growing demand from major infrastructure and housing projects.

Queensland ministers said the programs are designed to encourage more businesses to employ apprentices, strengthen the state’s skilled workforce, and create long-term career opportunities in the construction sector.

Industry representatives welcomed the funding, saying the incentives will help employers invest in training the next generation of tradies while supporting Queensland’s future infrastructure and economic growth.
