The ACT Government has approved- Fast-tracks Housing Delivery With New Priority Projects Law
Canberra Australia:
The ACT Government has approved new legislation aimed at accelerating the delivery of housing for Canberrans most in need.
Under the Planning Amendment Bill 2025, passed this week, critical public and community housing developments delivered by registered providers will automatically be classified as Territory Priority Projects.
This new classification is reserved for developments considered essential to supporting Canberra’s growing population. Projects granted this status will be exempt from third-party development application (DA) appeals, removing a major source of delay and allowing construction to proceed more efficiently.
The reforms form part of the ACT Government’s broader commitment to boost the supply of new homes across the territory. The government has set a target of enabling 30,000 new homes by 2030, including 5,000 public, community, and affordable housing dwellings.
Officials say the changes will help ensure that vital housing projects can be delivered faster, providing more secure and affordable options for Canberrans who need them most.
