The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) has announced a major national technology skills initiative aimed at helping small businesses strengthen their AI, cybersecurity and digital capabilities to improve productivity and drive sustainable growth.

The bank is investing in a series of practical learning programs and masterclasses designed to equip business owners with the knowledge to adopt emerging technologies—from AI-driven efficiency tools to essential cybersecurity practices that safeguard customer and business data.

As part of the initiative, CommBank will collaborate with Open AI to co-develop tailored AI learning resources and training sessions specifically designed for small businesses.

CommBank CEO Matt Comyn said the initiative reflects the bank’s ongoing commitment to supporting Australia’s small business community with the tools and expertise needed to remain competitive.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Australia’s economy, but many tell us they don’t have the time or resources to explore how technologies such as AI could help them,” Mr Comyn said.

New data from the 2025 Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA) Small Business Perspectives Report reveals that 48% of Australian small businesses are not currently using AI, and only 14% have integrated it into their operations or services—highlighting a significant opportunity for digital uplift.

The new CommBank program aims to close this gap by building digital confidence and capability across the sector. Practical examples include café owners using AI to streamline menu planning, retailers automating daily customer insights, and sole traders reducing administrative workload through AI-assisted proposals or invoicing.

“We want every small business to feel confident using digital technologies such as AI, whether they’re starting, running, or growing their business,” Mr Comyn said. “That also means helping them build strong cyber skills to protect their data, customers, and operations as they go digital.”

CommBank expects the initiative to help thousands of small businesses adopt secure, productive digital practices and strengthen their resilience in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
